Our 2006-2008 pilot program translated research into action in select HISD elementary schools, where we fine tuned the model for broad scale implementation. Preference was given to schools in traditionally underserved communities, where we continue to work. Our web-based researchable database of best practices and resources, in Houston and around the world, plus an on-line forum are available to all those interested in entering a dialog to solve the problem of childhood obesity. RfS is the first program to harness the power of all the available community resources—private, institutional, NGO and governmental—to implement a coordinated solution to childhood obesity through the schools.
The RfS Core Program includes three initiatives:
Identifying and training Team Nutrition Leaders (TNLs) in each elementary school and, with their feedback, choose from among the best available programs to tailor nutrition-based curriculums and initiatives that meet the individual school’s needs
Providing Chefs in Schools to each school to teach 4th graders how to cook healthy meals.
Build a Recipe Garden at each school, which provides an outdoor classroom environment and garden plots for each grade.
